Finnish as a second language

Students whose native language is not Finnish or Swedish are taught Finnish as a second language. The student learns Finnish in the Finnish-language environment, and he or she gradually develops diverse skills in Finnish along with his or her native language.

The aim of teaching Finnish as a second language is that the student would, by the end of basic education, learn as good skills in Finnish as possible, be able to fully study all subjects in the basic education, and be able to continue their studies after basic education.

The objective is that along with the Finnish language, the student will obtain equal opportunities to operate and interact in Finnish society. Together with teaching the student's native language, teaching Finnish as a second language reinforces the student's multi-cultural identity.
